Ireland Settlers
The Kearney Family originally came from County Louth, Ireland. Michael Kearney was born around 1811 in Ireland. He married Susan “Judith” Murnahan on April 11, 1833, in Carlingford, County Louth, Ireland. Susan (Judith) Murnahan was born around 1815 in County Louth, Ireland. Michael and Susan had eight children: Ann, Richard, Mary Jane, Henry, Michael Francis, Bridget, John, and Peter. The first six children of Michael and Susan were born in Ireland. On April 7, 1847, Michael and his family traveled from Liverpool, England, to New York City, USA, on the ship Liverpool. They emigrated south to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where they finally made their home.
Ann Kearney was born on April 30, 1934, in Carlingford, County Louth, Ireland. She was baptized in Cooley, Louth, Ireland, on May 1, 1834. She emigrated with her family to New York City on April 7, 1847. Six years later, Ann Kearney married Thomas Carr on November 22, 1853, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Thomas was born around 1826 in Ireland. Thomas and Ann had eleven children together: Mary Ann, James Francis, Maria, Michael, Annie, Elizabeth, Susan, Thomas, Richard, Cecelia, and Matthew Carr. Sadly, only five of those children survived into old age. Unfortunately, Ann died on July 22, 1880, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was buried on July 24, 1880, in Old Cathedral Cemetery in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. Her husband, Thomas, died in Camden, New Jersey, on December 17, 1914. He was buried on December 22, 1914, in Old Cathedral Cemetery, alongside his wife.
Richard Kearney was the second child born to Michael and Susan Kearney. He was born on January 21, 1836, in Upper Willville, Carlingford, County Louth, Ireland. Richard was baptized on January 22, 1836, in Carlingford, Louth, Ireland. His godparent was James Murnahan. Twenty-five years later, on January 3, 1861, Richard Kearney married Anna Louise McBride in St.Patrick's Church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Anna McBride, daughter of John and Rose McBride, was born on June 10, 1839, in New York, USA. Richard and Anna had thirteen children: Michael, Rose Ann, John McBride, Susan Agnes, George, Richard, Henry John, Ann, Catharine, Mary Gabriel, Margaret, Joseph, and Catharine Ursula Kearney. Unfortunately, five of those children died as infants. Richard Kearney sadly died in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on December 29, 1906. His wife, Ann, died in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on March 17, 1918. They were buried in Old Cathedral Cemetery in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Richard’s probate process was completed on January 9, 1907, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Mary “May” Jane Kearney was born around 1838 in County Louth, Ireland. She was baptized on January 10, 1838, in Carlingford, Louth, Ireland. After she came to America, she married a man named Michael Dougherty. Although there is not much information at this time, I do know that they had two daughters together: Eliza Kate and Mary Dougherty. After her husband's death around 1862, Mary got remarried. On May 26, 1861, in St. Francis Xavier Parish in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Mary Jane Kearney married William McGuire. Their witnesses were Michael Kearney and Mary Mullen. I do not have much information about William McGuire. However, William and Mary had three daughters: Mary Ann, Jane, and Susan McGuire. Mary Jane McGuire died in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on March 6, 1877. She was buried on March 8, 1877, in Cathedral Cemetery in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Henry Kearney was born on October 13, 1841, in Carlingford, Louth, Ireland. After he came to America with his family, he married Anne O’Hanlon, who was born around 1839 in Pennsylvania. They had three children together: a baby boy, Mary, and Katherine Kearney. Henry sadly passed away on August 25, 1877, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was buried on August 28, 1877, in Old Cathedral Cemetery.
Michael Francis Kearney Jr was born on December 2, 1842, in Carlingford, Louth, Ireland. Twenty years after he arrived in the U.S., Michael Kearney married Rose Cecelia Reed on August 25, 1867, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Rose Cecelia Reed, daughter of James and Alice Reed, was born on March 6, 1845, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Michael and Rose had seven children together: Alice Rose, Susan Cecelia, Michael Francis III, James Ignatius, Richard Joseph, Henry, and Rose Cecelia Kearney. Rose sadly died on February 17, 1905, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was buried on February 21, 1905, in Holy Cross Cemetery in Yeadon, Pennsylvania. Michael died 22 years later, on November 29, 1927, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was buried with his wife in Holy Cross Cemetery on December 3, 1927.
Bridget Kearney was born in County Louth, Ireland, on May 25, 1845. According to research, she never married or had children. At this moment, her death date is unknown as there is not enough evidence.
John Kearney was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on May 8, 1850. He sadly died on December 2, 1900, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was buried in New Cathedral Cemetery on December 4, 1900.
Peter Kearney was born around 1852 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He married a woman named Mary; her surname is unknown at this time. They had no children together. Peter died on July 14, 1881, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was buried on July 18, 1881, in Old Cathedral Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Michael and Susan Kearney left their homeland of Ireland with their family to start new lives in America. They were alive long enough to see some of their children create their own families. But unfortunately, Michael and Susan died relatively young. Michael passed away on July 17, 1854, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, just two years after the birth of his last son, Peter. He was buried on July 22, 1854, in Old Cathedral Cemetery. His wife, Susan, sadly passed away on May 11, 1878, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was buried alongside her husband on May 14, 1878, in Old Cathedral Cemetery.
